Fiat 124, The Last of the 'Drivers' Car

The Fiat 124 may not be the fastest car on the block but it is a true “drivers” car. It features all the modern amenities you could desire, but not excessively to the point where it diminishes your driving experience. Furthermore, this MX-5 twin presents a more sophisticated option for buyers looking for the responsiveness and experience of a 2-seater sports coupe, while still arriving to business meetings wrapped in retro Italian styling.

Specifications

The 124 shares its’ 90.9-inch wheelbase and platform with the MX-5, and is produced in the same plant in Japan as its’ Mazda cousin. The Fiat 124 differs from the MX-5 though, in that it features an Italian 1.4-liter turbo power plant that puts out 160hp, and 184 ft-lb’s of torque. Allowing the 124 to take you from 0-60 in just 6.8 seconds. (This is likely a conservative estimate, as I was able to get to 60mph in 6 seconds flat; and other reports have been as low as 5.9 seconds.)

The Fiat also differs from the MX-5 in suspension components. The Fiat has its own springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars. Giving the 124 the ability to gracefully take corners with confidence. Body roll in this car is virtually non-existent.

The Interior

The materials inside are soft-touch and aesthetically pleasing. There is an infotainment center perched on the dashboard that is touch-screen, and easy to use. If touch screen isn’t your preferred method of control, there’s also a center-console knob that can be used to control the infotainment center. The seats are decently comfortable and even have speakers in the head rests for when you’re driving with the top down. The convertible top is intuitive and can be quickly be put up or down in a few seconds.

The Driving Experience

The driving experience is the true differentiator for this car. Driving this car makes driving fun again. With 22psi of boost, it has plenty of “pep” for your daily commute. Low-end torque is plentiful with minimal turbo lag. And as mentioned before, body-roll is minimal. Cruising down the highway with the top-down is truly a remarkable experience in this car!
