2026 Ford Explorer Tremor Review: More Than a Sticker Package?
Chung Score: 8.7 / 10

Every automaker has an off-road trim now. Subaru has Wilderness, Ford has Tremor, and so on down the line. The question is always the same: is it hardware, or is it stickers?

I loaded this one with camping gear to find out. The trip fell apart, but the test didn't.

Our test vehicle was a 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor 4WD finished in Star White Metallic Tri-Coat over Onyx with Miko suede inserts, powered by the 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 and a 10-speed automatic. Base price is $48,465. The $11,850 Ultimate Package and a handful of smaller options carried it to a total MSRP of $64,705.

The Hardware

The Tremor is not a decal job. It brings a one-inch lift to 8.7 inches of ground clearance, off-road shocks, skid plates, a Torsen limited-slip rear axle, P265/65R18 all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, off-road auxiliary lighting and a Class III tow package rated to 5,000 pounds.

Those trail lights matter. We came back from the campsite well after dark, and between them and the 360-degree camera, which stays live on the screen in Off-Road mode, I could pick out brush and rocks I had no business seeing.

Living With It

This is where the Explorer earns its money. There are 14 cubic feet behind the third row, 40 with it folded, and roughly 84 with everything flat. The third row is genuinely usable. At 5'7" I had legroom back there, along with vents, reading lights and USB-C.

Inside, the 13.2-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster are quick and sensibly laid out. The Ultimate Package adds a fixed moonroof, ambient lighting, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen system and multicontour massage seats. They are lovely. I still would not check the box.

It drives with real composure, on pavement and off it.

The Catch

8.7 inches is modest for something wearing an off-road badge. The EcoBoost returns 17 mpg city, 22 highway and 19 combined, which is not staggering in 2026. And that big moonroof does not open.

Final Thoughts

This one is for the active family of five that camps, skis, and occasionally tows a small trailer. It will take you where you need to go comfortably and with composure.

Pros:

  • Genuine off-road hardware, not an appearance package

  • Composed and easy to drive on road and off

  • One of the better third rows in the segment

  • 84 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats flat

  • Strong value at the $48,465 base price

  • Trail lights and the 360-degree camera earn their keep at night

Cons:

  • 8.7 inches of ground clearance is modest for the badge

  • 19 mpg combined

  • The $11,850 Ultimate Package is hard to justify

  • The moonroof is fixed and does not open
